Liverpool are planning to offer Roberto Firmino a new, short-term contract to extend his stay at Anfield.
The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent this summer, with a fresh deal yet to be signed. But as per Brazilian outlet UOL, Firmino’s spell on Merseyside will indeed stretch into a ninth season.
They claim that Bobby will be handed a one or two year deal to prolong his Liverpool career. A longer-term contract is reportedly ‘not being considered’ by the club.
For Firmino’s part, the forward is said to prefer to stay at Liverpool, even if that’s only a small extension.
Bobby done quite done yet
This is really good news for Liverpool fans. Some are no doubt still on the fence over giving Bobby a new contract, but for one or two years extra, it’s surely a no-brainer.
He may now be thirty-one, but Firmino is still a really key player for Jurgen Klopp. That has been as evident as ever this season, with the No.9 enjoying something of a renaissance.
He already has nine goals this season – just two less than in the whole of the last campaign.
2022/23 also saw Firmino score his 100th goal for the club. As one of only players to have achieved such a milestone, his legacy at Liverpool is already assured.
But it looks like the Brazilian will now be given the chance to build on it even further. With a two-year deal set to push him close to his thirty-fourth birthday, he will have given a decade of superb service to Liverpool.
In a time where footballer’s tend to change clubs with more frequency than ever, that kind of stay should be really applauded.
For the majority of his time at Liverpool, the ‘excellent’ Firmino has been a key player in a winning team. The fans love him, his teammates love him and Klopp loves him too.
The day Bobby leaves Liverpool will be a very sad one indeed. Thankfully, it looks like that day is set to be pushed back – for a little while at least.
