Liverpool defender Joel Matip has lauded centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate, ahead of France taking on Argentina in the World Cup final later on today.
Taking to an interview with the Reds’ official site, Matip shared his delight at how well the youngster is getting on out in Qatar.
The 23-year-old played a major part in Les Bleus’ 2-0 victory over Morocco in the semi-final.
“He’s so young and [he has] so much quality already,” the 31-year-old said.

“He’s showed that now again with the national team – with an amazing team. He’s shown the class he’s got. He’s self-confident, nice, and a really kind person.
“Especially [at] this age, it’s amazing what he can do. He’s strong in challenges, in the air, on the ground, the pace, [he’s] comfortable with the ball – it’s everything you need [as a defender].”
On the squad wishing him well, Matip added: “Of course, he is the only teammate left, so there is no hard choice for us to make when he is the only one.
“I hope he comes back with a big smile – this will be a win then!”
Matip lauds Konate
Along with Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool are blessed to have three world-class options at centre-back.
Since arriving at Anfield on a free transfer in 2016, the Cameroonian has made 174 appearances for the club, cementing himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the league.
Furthermore, Konate – who arrived on Merseyside in 2021 in a deal worth £36m – has burst onto the European scene.
At just 23-years-old, he has already demonstrated he is more than capable to perform at the highest level in both the Champions League and the Premier League. Now, he has even added the World Cup to that list.

Matip is now 31 years old, and having been riddled with injuries in the past, he isn’t expected to have an extra long career.
Therefore, the Frenchman will be preparing to take over, as the heir of Liverpool’s number-one spot at centre-back.
