The 25-year-old only joined the north London club in January, arriving after a £22m deadline day transfer had been agreed.

According to The Guardian, whilst Anfield legend Steven Gerrard was in charge as the club’s manager, Aston Villa tried to sign Bentancur in January – before he joined Tottenham.

The Villains even made a £20.8m offer for the Uruguayan, but Juventus rejected the move.

Liverpool now want Bentancur

Since making the switch to the Premier League, Bentacur has seriously impressed.

Thus far this season, the midfielder has already made 21 appearances; including 14 in the English top-flight, during which he has bagged four goals and two assists.

He has also started in every Champions League group game for Spurs, helping the side through to the round of 16.

Deservingly, he has been ranked as Antonio Conte’s second-best player in the league this season, closely trailing behind Harry Kane. The manager even described his form as ‘outstanding’.

Liverpool could seriously use an additional midfield player in January.

With a number of big-money options potentially joining the club in the summer, Bentancur would be a brilliant addition to the squad next month.
