Former Reds defender Glen Johnson has urged Liverpool to hijack Manchester United’s move for PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo.

Speaking in an interview with GGRecon, the Sky Sports pundit was questioned about Jurgen Klopp’s interest in the Netherlands star.

Consequently, he claimed that, at £50m, the 23-year-old would be a bargain, meaning the Merseyside outfit should look to ‘hijack’ the Red Devils’ swoop in January.

“I’d encourage them to hijack the move purely for how good the player is, rather than the fact he could be going to Manchester United,” Johnson said.

“£50 million is cheap nowadays, so if you can get a young, quality player for that price, then you’ve got to do what you can to hijack it.”

After rising to prominence last year, the PSV youngster came close to a summer switch to Old Trafford.

This ultimately fell through, making way for Leeds United and Southampton to capitalise on deadline day.

Gakpo decided against rushing into a move and remained in the Eredivisie for the start of the season.

This was a brilliant decision by the 23-year-old, as his stock has risen exponentially since.

In 24 matches for PSV this term, the winger has bagged 13 goals and 17 assists.

At the World Cup with the Netherlands, Gakpo demonstrated he can perform on football’s biggest stage. In each of Holland’s group games out in Qatar, the attacker scored in all three fixtures.

As a result, he was hailed as ‘incredible’ by commentator Matteo Bonetti.

Therefore, if the opportunity does arise for Liverpool to hijack a move for Gakpo, Klopp should jump at the chance.
