PSV Eindhoven attacker and reported Liverpool target Cody Gakpo has sent Virgil van Dijk a message following the Netherlands’ exit from the World Cup.

The 23-year-old went in to the tournament with heightened expectations after a brilliant start to the season in the Eredivisie.

He came away from Qatar with massive transfer speculation, following an emphatic campaign for Holland.

However, despite his incredible form, the Dutch were eventually knocked out of the competition by Argentina, following a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals.

Following their exit, the Reds defender took to Instagram to share his disappointment, having captained his team for the first time at a major international tournament.

With the Netherlands squad flooding the comments with support, Gakpo also posted a response.

He shared a word-less message consisting of two love hearts, following the side’s brilliant effort to reach the semi-finals.

Whilst this may just seem like camaraderie amongst national teammates, Gakpo has frequently been linked with a move to Liverpool.

As per Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer, the Reds are interested in the PSV winger.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side are said to be behind in the race to his signature. Fabrizio Romano claims that, although there are signs of growing interest, Manchester United are further along towards landing the talented attacker.

Ever since, the 23-year-old became the first man in Holland’s history to score in their first three games of a World Cup tournament, PSV are said to have increased the player’s price-tag.

It is now believed it will take £52m to acquire his services. Whilst this is a jump, this could still end up being a bargain.

Therefore, hopefully van Dijk will have put in a good word about Liverpool, as the club look to build a team of winning silverware across the next decade.
