Liverpool made informal contact over the possibility of signing Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus last summer, according to journalist David Ornstein.

Taking to his World Cup transfer column for The Athletic, he reports on the Ghana international, who seriously impressed out in Qatar.

As per the report, Everton agreed personal terms with the player on deadline day back in September. However, the Dutch giants ending up blocking the move, having already lost a number of key men.

Whilst the Toffees remain keen, it is said that the Reds made contact with Ajax last summer – opening up the possibility of a reprised move.

According to 90min, Liverpool are interested in a winter swoop. Much to the Merseyside club’s advantage, Ornstein claims the 22-year-old has a firm desire to leave Ajax in January.

Other teams from the Premier League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are also said to be watching the situation closely.

Kudus wants to leave in January

During a sensational run of form earlier this season, Kudus scored in three consecutive Champions League matches. One of these goals came against Liverpool, with a thunderous finish clearly impressing the Reds boss.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Jurgen Klopp hailed praise on the 22-year-old, having said: “It was an incredible strike from Kudus.”

With this initial alert to his talents, the Merseyside outfit have been monitoring his progress ever since.

Having impressed with Ghana at the World Cup, he was hailed as the best player at the tournament by former Barcelona midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng.

Demonstrating he can perform at the highest level, Liverpool could now opt to reprise their interest in Kudus with a move in January – something the starlet desperately wants.
