Liverpool interviewed Didier Deschamps in June 2010 before appointing Roy Hodgson as manager.
That’s according to Daily Mail journalist Dominic King, who wonders why the Frenchman’s name never gets brought up with jobs in the Premier League.
However, he reveals that on 23 June 2010, the Reds interviewed the coach over their vacant managerial position.
He had just guided Marseille to a league and cup double, having previously impressed in his first year as a coach, when he took Monaco to the Champions League final in 2004.
Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow was said to be impressed by Deschamps’ presentation. He liked the fact that the manager was only 41 at the time, meaning he brought a youthful outlook to his approach.
However, the board ultimately doubted the Frenchman and his so-called lack of experience. Instead, they opted to appoint Hodgson from Fulham.

What an appointment this would have been at the time, especially since the Reds needed that youthful exuberance to help rejuvenate the squad.
As a manager, Deschamps’ career has been absolutely incredible. After his amazing achievements at Monaco, which include a domestic trophy alongside reaching the Champions League final, he led Marseille to three back-to-back French League Cups.
Also winning the French Super Cup in two of three of these years, the 54-year-old was then appointed as manager of the France national team.
Since then, Deschamps guided Les Bleus to a World Cup win in 2018, after falling in the final to Portugal just two years prior at the Euros.
Alongside a Nations League victory in 2021, the Frenchman now hopes to add a second World Cup trophy to his honours whilst out in Qatar.
With all of that said, what an incredibly stupid decision the board made 12 years ago. Although the Reds have the best manager in the world now, he sure would have been the better option in 2010, when the club appointed Hodgson.
