Liverpool are preparing a move to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge in the January transfer window.

That’s according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux. They claim that the Reds are ready to ‘go on the offensive’ for Berge during next month’s window.

The 24-year-old is said to be keen to leave the Blades to play Premier League football. To that end, Liverpool are reportedly not alone in their interest of the Norwegian.

Chelsea are also claimed to be in the running. Both the Blues and Liverpool are described as being ‘attentive’ to Berge’s situation for the past several months.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly anticipating the exit of midfield duo Naby Keita and Arthur Melo in the summer. Chelsea meanwhile are expecting to lose Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Denis Zakaria.

As a result, the two teams are said to be preparing to do battle for the mid-season arrival of Berge.

Berge looking to fulfil Anfield ‘dream’

Sander Berge is a name that has continually cropped up in relation to Liverpool. Even before he joined Sheffield United in 2020, the rangy midfielder was being linked with a move to Merseyside.

The younger Berge didn’t do much to pour cold water on those rumours, either.

After playing at Anfield for Genk in late 2019, the then 21-year-old told TV2 that experiencing the stadium had been a ‘dream.’

“Playing at Anfield is a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians,” he explained via The Metro. “Liverpool are the best team [at the moment] and have the most fans. So I could certainly like to play at Anfield as often as possible.”

Berge has since played just once more at the famous old stadium – scoring a penalty in a 2-1 Premier League loss. But should the chance emerge to do so on a regular basis, you can’t imagine his stance has changed too much.

With all due respect to Sheffield United, he won’t experience such famous grounds playing in the Championship. United are looking good for a return to the top table next season, but Berge has always felt destined for bigger things.
