Gary Lineker makes seven-word joke about Liverpool player during Brazil game last night

Gary Lineker has joked that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was ‘keeping Brazil in it’ against South Korea last night.

Brazil strolled to a 4-1 win in the World Cup’s round of 16 on Monday. 2-0 up within the first 13 minutes and four goals to the good by half-time, the game was as routine as it gets for the South Americans.

And yet, Alisson still managed to steal the spotlight. The 30-year-old made two stunning second half saves to keep the score at 4-0.

Ever the online jester, this forced Lineker to make a typically tongue-in-cheek remark about the Liverpool man’s display. “Alisson has kept Brazil in this,” he joked on Twitter, along with an obligatory ‘winky face.’

Korea did eventually beat Ali with a pearl of a strike from Paik Seung-Ho. Nevertheless, this is a performance that will live long in the memory from the Liverpool ‘keeper. Add it to the list.

Is there a goalkeeper on the planet better than Alisson? On this kind of form, you’d have to say not.

Perhaps Brazil would have made last night into a routine win regardless of their goalie. They certainly have the attacking talent to put any side to the sword with conviction.

But the fact that Alisson was still called into action numerous times suggests that they still have frailties at the back. When you’re still relying heavily on a 38-year-old Thiago Silva, that’s hardly a surprise.

Either way, it means that the Liverpool man gets to show off what Reds fans have been seeing week after week for nearly five years. Alisson is a truly special goalkeeper. He is now proving that on the world stage.

Having bowed out disappointingly to Belgium in the quarter-final four years ago, Brazil will surely go one or two better this time.

Since that 2-1 defeat in Kazan, Alisson has taken his game to another level. Remarkably, he was still a Roma player back then. In the intervening years he has won copious amounts of trophies, both collectively with Liverpool and as an individual.

Now, he looks ready to claim football’s ultimate prize with his country. There’s still a way to go, but with an array of riches up-front and Alisson at the back, Brazil are looking good.
