Liverpool are set to rival Bayern Munich and Juventus to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio in January, according to the Sunday Mirror (4/12; page 83).

Out of contract at the end of the season, the 26-year-old will be available to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside of Spain in the winter window.

As per the report, the Reds have admired the Los Blancos attacker for some time, and they could look to make a push to sign him in January, either for then or for the summer.

However, the Merseyside outfit will face strong competition from a number of European giants next month, if they do decide to make a move to lure the Spain international to Anfield.

Asensio’s representatives are thought to be planning discussions with several clubs, however Liverpool are touted with a keen interest, with Jurgen Klopp said to be a massive fan of the player.

Liverpool want to sign Asensio

Despite being tipped for greatness upon his arrival at the Bernabeu back in 2015, the 26-year-old has never truly secured himself a guaranteed place in the Madrid starting XI.

Regardless, he has still managed to put up brilliant numbers for the club. In 250 appearances, Asensio has bagged 52 goals and 27 assists. These have come from a variety of positions; however, he has become most accustomed to playing on the right wing in recent seasons.

Although the attacker has been leading the line out for Spain at the World Cup, he has only started for Carlo Ancelotti’s side once in La Liga this term. Usually coming off the bench for the final ten minutes, guaranteed game-time elsewhere could convince the player to make the move elsewhere.

Despite the lack of minutes, Ancelotti recently claimed Asensio is an ‘extraordinary’ player. As a cheap signing or a free transfer, this would certainly be the case.

The Spaniard has even called Liverpool a ‘wonderful club’ in the past, so Klopp may feel optimistic in his chances of landing the Madrid man at Anfield.
