Jordan Henderson put England in front against Senegal on Sunday. The Liverpool captain burst forward to get on the end of Jude Bellingham’s pass inside the box to slot home for a massive goal.
That, after all, put England on their way to a 2-0 half-time lead in the World Cup last 16. It’s by far the biggest international goal of Henderson’s career – and probably his entire career, too.
His previous efforts did at least come in competitive games, with one at Euro 2020 against Ukraine to make it 4-0 and another against Albania in World Cup Qualification. This, though, was on another level.
Pundits understandably lined up to hail Henderson. Jamie Carragher took to Twitter to point out that this is a player who faces a lot fo questions about his ability.
“Brilliant Jordan Henderson!” he said. “So often questioned, but always answers in the right way.”
Gary Lineker, too, made sure to praise
“Wooooohoooooo!” he wrote on Twitter. “Great from [Harry] Kane, superb from [Jude] Bellingham, marvellous from Henderson. Get in!”
Jordan Henderson gets his World Cup goal
For a player who has lifted every major trophy as captain and played a key role in a dominant Liverpool side, Henderson gets more than his fair share of criticism. Here was a reminder of what he can do, though.

It was also a little notable that he received the pass from Bellingham – Liverpool’s primary transfer target next year. Henderson was sure to point out the teenager’s role in the goal as he spent his ‘celebration’ pointing to Bellingham.
Let’s hope this is the start of a wonderful partnership between the two, then. If we’re lucky, we’ll see it in Red next year.
