Liverpool really tried to sign 14-year-old who has been playing three years above his age group – Romano

Liverpool were one of the teams trying to sign Sheffield United teenager Kylan Midwood.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Writing on Twitter, the transfer expert noted Liverpool as one of the clubs who attempted to convince the 14-year-old to join them.

However, the Reds attempts are said to have been ultimately unsuccessful. That’s because Manchester City have reportedly pipped them to the post.

“Manchester City have agreed to sign U15 Sheffield United top talent Kylan Midwood,” wrote Romano. “They have beaten Chelsea, Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle to the signing. City want to develop and sign the best young British talent and offer pathway to first team football.”

Not this time for Liverpool

Although Midwood isn’t exactly a household name – what 14-year-old is! – this is still disappointing.

Over recent years Liverpool have done a god job of hoovering up some top talent from across the British Isles. Both Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon were pinched as prodigies, while Ben Doak had already played first team football at sixteen.

Irish youngster Trent Kone-Doherty was also brought into the academy and looks like an exciting prospect.

All bar Kone-Doherty have now made senior debuts for Liverpool. The quartet look capable of being potential first-teamers at Anfield for years to come.

So, it’s always disappointing to lose out on adding another to the ranks. Especially to rival like City.

As per The Sheffield Star, Midwood had already played for Sheffield United’s U17 side earlier this month.

For a 14-year-old, that’s not to be sniffed at. He has years and years to develop and will do so under the guidance of some of the best coaches around at City.

As with any young player, it’s a long road to the first team. But it already looks like a road that Midwood is ready to steam down. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’ll be doing so as a Liverpool player.
