‘Getting closer’: Coach says 18-year-old Liverpool prospect is about to remind everyone just how good he is

Liverpool’s academy director Alex Inglethorpe has suggested that Kaide Gordon will soon be back fit.

Injury has mean that Gordon hasn’t played a single minute for the Reds this season. After a breakthrough campaign in 2021/22, it has been a frustrating time. But, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Inglethorpe said that that could be about to change.

“Kaide is closer to getting back and his rehabilitation will now be on the grass, which is always a good sign for any player,” said the coach. “Mentally it’s a big step when they know they can go back on the field and out of the gym. The injury has been hugely disappointing for him. I’ve been very impressed with his attitude since being ruled out.

“I’ve caught up with him a couple of times and it has been really nice to get to know him a bit better on a personal level. There is undoubted talent there and it has been a long way back, but I’m sure he’ll remind everyone how good he is.”

Gordon frustration almost over

It’s funny how careers can work sometimes. With Liverpool suffering injuries to first teamers Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, Gordon would have surely had plenty of game time this season.

This would have allowed him the chance to show that he can be a valuable squad member moving forward.

Instead, injury has robbed him of that chance. Who can know whether a similar opportunity will present itself in the future.

Given Kaide’s talent, there’s a decent chance that it will, though. Jurgen Klopp is obviously a big fan of his, handing him a Liverpool debut when he was barely seventeen.

That would suggest that the manager hasn’t suddenly forgotten what he can bring to the side. When Gordon has completed the necessary rehab, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the Liverpool squad once more.

From that point on, perhaps only injury will dictate whether or not the 18-year-old stays there.

As Inglethorpe says, his talent is not in question. What will be the making of this particular talented teen will be how he bounces back from such a lengthy setback.

If he shows the same attitude, application and skill that saw him play four times for the Reds last season, chances will come his way.
