PSV Eindhoven winger and reported Liverpool target Cody Gakpo says he’s fully focused on the World Cup, despite major transfer interest coming from Anfield, according to The Athletic.

Ahead of the Netherlands’ final group match against hosts Qatar, the 23-year-old spoke of the transfer interest surrounding him.

“I’m focused now on the World Cup,” he said.

“It’s always nice to hear but I just focus here and do my best.”

When asked if he is open to a move when the January window opens, the player claimed: “Right now I’m busy with the Dutch team. I’ll see what happens in the winter. In football, anything is possible.”

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Dutchman’s agents are already working on a potential transfer.

This follows claims that the Reds are ready to negotiate with PSV over a proposed move, after the World Cup has concluded.

Gakpo focused on the World Cup

Although Gakpo’s fine form out in Qatar will confirm to Liverpool that they need to make an approach for him in January, it will also drive his asking price up, which is currently set at £45m.

In all three of the Netherlands’ group games, the 23-year-old managed to score in each – for which he was hailed ‘sensational’ by journalist Thierry Nyann. This is an obvious continuation of his club form, having bagged nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie appearances.

Alongside the Reds, both Arsenal and Manchester United are credited with interest in the attacker.

Presumably each of these Premier League clubs would be willing to match PSV’s £45m valuation, so it is likely the winner will come down to a bidding war.

Therefore, Liverpool should do all they can to get Gakpo to Anfield, so this could require a much greater transfer fee.

Either way, the youngster truly seems worth the money.
