The asking price for Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez has now increased to over £100m, according to Record.
As per the report, with La Liga giants Real Madrid now in the race to secure his signature, Benfica are demanding over £100m to sign the 21-year-old in 2023.
It is said that Los Blancos have been impressed by what they’ve seen from the midfielder out in Qatar, after he scored an incredible goal during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico.
Prior to the World Cup, Sport claimed that the Reds were already chasing the youngster, whilst A Bola and O Jogo now report that Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the running to sign him next summer.
Benfica now demanding £100m for Fernandez
Unfortunately for the Reds, the rest of the world has now been alerted to the 21-year-old’s talents after his emphatic displays out in Qatar.
Although he is yet to start for Argentina at the World Cup, Fernandez has been absolutely crucial for the side after coming off the bench.
After losing their opening fixture to Saudi Arabia in one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history, Mexico was a must-win game for Lionel Scaloni’s side.
Lionel Messi scored the crucial opener in the 65th minute, before Fernandez curled a sensational finish into the far corner just three minutes from time – ensuring his country victory.
For Benfica this season, the midfielder has made 24 appearances. This includes five matches in the Champions League, during which the youngster assisted against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.
Incredibly impressive at just 21-years-old, Fernandez has now emerged as one of the hottest prospects in European football.
As a result, pundit Joe Cole labelled him ‘perfect’ for his display at the World Cup.
With Madrid now in the race, this won’t be an easy signing for Liverpool to make. However, if they miss out on Jude Bellingham, they should go all in on the Argentinian.
