Report: Arsenal set to beat Liverpool to player who was ‘shocked’ by his own price

Liverpool won’t be getting Mykhaylo Mudryk as Arsenal near a deal, according to reports. The Reds will have to look elsewhere.

This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Arsenal are close to signing Mykhaylo Mudryk and have the ‘framework’ in place for a transfer.

That comes after Shakhtar Donetsk lowered their asking price for the star. They’d now apparently accept around £40m for Mudryk, with add-ons. That’s down from the £90m they previously wanted.

That £90m valuation was one that Mudryk himself couldn’t understand. “When I found out about my price, I wasn’t just surprised; I was shocked,” Mudryk told Sport Arena.

He’s got his wish, then, as Shakhtar are willing to do business. Arsenal, it seems, will take advantage.

Arsenal near Mykhaylo Mudryk deal

This is one Liverpool will write off. They’ve been linked with Mudryk, too, after his fantastic displays in Europe this season.

“Liverpool have scouted Mudryk, too, but won’t pay above market value and know Shakhtar aren’t easy to negotiate with,” journalist Ben Jacobs recently said.

Well, that price has apparently come down but Arsenal are the ones at the front of the queue. In truth, though, we didn’t think this one would quite work.

Mudryk plays on the left and Liverpool are well-stocked in that area. Luis Díaz is one of the world’s best, Darwin Nunez is scoring goals in the role and Diogo Jota can, too.

We feel it’s just about justifiable if Fabio Carvalho changes his role – but that’s the only way. And even then, Mudryk wouldn’t get regular first-team football.

That’s something he’s after, and has voiced it. While Liverpool can finally meet his asking price, we’re just not sure this one was ever the right fit for them.
