‘Not me being biased’: Neville makes Man United v Liverpool claim that hurts FSG

Man United and Liverpool both want new owners in 2023. Gary Neville has predicted exactly how that will go as they compete for bidders.

In a unique twist of fate, both Liverpool and Manchester United are up for sale right now. Both FSG and the Glazer family want to know what their respective assets are worth.

That might just mean minority investment, of course. In fact, it’s very possible that neither club exchanges hands as they’ll each have valuations that must be met. Few will have the funds to do so, however – and that creates an interesting problem.

Given there are only a few potential buyers for each, the two clubs will essentially compete within the same pool. Every potential owner for United is a potential owner for Liverpool, after all.

Gary Neville discussed that for Sky Sports this weekend. He believes that those bidders will naturally want United first and that Liverpool will have to wait.

“Manchester United will be more sought after and will fetch a higher price than Liverpool,” said Neville.

“Unless Liverpool have got something sorted, I think they’re going to have to wait a little bit because I think the buyers will go to Manchester United first – unless there’s a Liverpool fan who is very wealthy somewhere and has an allegiance to Liverpool.

“But I think if you were looking at both, as an asset side by side, you’d choose Manchester United and that’s not me being biased as a Manchester United fan.”

Neville is right, unfortunately. United are the bigger asset and potential buyers will want them first – they’re the easiest to make money from as the biggest brand.

There isn’t much in it, of course, but unless there’s a personal desire to own Liverpool, united will be the one to go for. It’s something we touched on when the Glazers announced an intention to sell.

And United reportedly see it that way, too. They believe they’ll get first pick over Liverpool and that the Reds must wait their turn.

On the flip side, United could end up going for such a high price that they raise the amount FSG can ask for. That’s really the lone positive for FSG here – but potentially a very lucrative one.
