‘Impressive’: Rob Green astounded by ‘spectacular’ 18-year-old at the World Cup, after claims Liverpool want him

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green was left astounded by Spain midfielder and reported Liverpool target Gavi, who played a crucial part in Luis Enrique’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica today.

Speaking as a commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live, the former Chelsea shot-stopper lavished praise on the 18-year-old, who became the youngest goal-scorer in a World Cup match since Pelé in the 1958 final.

“Gavi is impressive,” Green said.

“I’ve seen him for Barcelona a number of times live and he’s very, very good against the teams that aren’t so good.

“It’s when he’s come up against the big teams in the Champions League, that’s when it’s been a question mark.

“Yes, he’s young. Yes, [he’s] got time to improve but he’s in a World Cup, he’s been playing in the Champions League. He’s also for now.”

According to Sport, back in the summer, Liverpool were very keen to bring the youngster to Anfield, after the player had rejected three contract offers from Barcelona.

However, after a transfer failed to come to fruition, Gavi signed a new deal with the Catalan giants lasting until 2026. To Jurgen Klopp’s dismay, the release clause was set at £862m.

Despite this, with the financial troubles Barcelona have faced in recent times, any player in Xavi’s squad remains a possibility on the transfer market.

Green praises Liverpool target Gavi

With Liverpool desperate for a midfielder over the summer, Gavi would have been an unreal signing for the Merseyside club.

At just 18-years-old, the Spaniard has already become a regular in the Barcelona XI.

This season, the teenager has already played 19 matches – including five fixtures in the Champions League. Overall, he has incredibly amassed 66 appearances for the Catalan club.

As with most Spanish midfielders, Gavi is technically gifted on the ball. He is calm and composed in possession, and his pin-point accuracy when passing allows the attack to advance. He also is an elite dribbler of the ball, showing resemblances to Reds star Thiago Alcantara.

Hailed by Barcelona boss Xavi as ‘spectacular’, the youngster is a sensational talent who Liverpool should have tried harder to secure this summer.

Despite this, with the La Liga outfit’s financial difficulties, never say never to a potential move – however unlikely it may be.
