Former Liverpool transfer target Randal Kolo Muani has been called up as a late replacement in France’s World Cup squad.
As per Equipe de France on Twitter, the 23-year-old, who joined Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, has replaced the injured Christopher Nkunku.
Kolo Muani was on the market as a free transfer during the summer window. Having failed to agree fresh terms at Nantes, he moved to the German club for nothing.
Since then, his reputation has been enhanced further. Scoring eight goals in 23 appearances for Eintracht, Kolo Muani also earned his first caps for France in September.
Perhaps Liverpool will be regretting their decision not to sign the forward after all.
Liverpool made to regret Muani decision
Kolo Muani was probably not a name familiar to too many Liverpool fans when he was being linked with a move to Anfield earlier this year.
But after scoring 13 goals for Nantes in 2021/22, the Reds reportedly considered signing him.
Looking at how well he has done since then, they would have been wise to push ahead on that. Kolo Muani is a fast and skilful dribbler who can play wide or centrally. Although Liverpool aren’t lacking for that in their squad, injuries have left them short this season.
Being able to call on a player like Kolo Muani in the squad would have helped soften the blow of the loss of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
Given his rise to stardom, it would be safe to assume that the young forward will be on the move again soon.
Frankfurt are, of course, in the Champions League last-16. They also currently sit in fourth spot in the Bundesliga. But this call-up is a big moment for Kolo Muani. It may pique the interest of some ‘bigger’ clubs who held off last time around.
Once Liverpool take a good look at a player, they tend to keep abreast of their development. From what they will have seen from this particular former target, it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see them come back in for him.
So, Liverpool fans may have another reason to watch Ibrahima Konate’s France. The World Champions have lost a superb option in Nkunku, but Kolo Muani is a special talent in his own right.
