Report: Liverpool now in pole position to sign ‘sensational’ attacker, Lijnders really wants Klopp to get him

Liverpool are now in pole position to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, according to Calciomercato.

As per the Italian outlet, the 23-year-old is set to leave the Eredivisie club at the end of the season.

After heavy speculation involved Manchester United and Southampton this summer, the Netherlands international came close to a deadline day move to Leeds United.

It was later revealed Gakpo had rejected the proposal as the deadline day transfer felt rushed. However, it has since been said the player is no longer keen on joining the Whites, and the club have now fallen back in the pursuit.

As a result, Calciomercato claim Liverpool now lead the race to secure his signature next summer, when the forward is set to leave PSV.

With the youngster’s incredible form this season, it is no wonder a whole host of Premier League teams have been linked with a summer move.

In 14 Eredivisie appearances this term, Gakpo has magnificently bagged nine goals and 12 assists.

Even in the Europa League, the Dutchman has added a further three goals and two assists to his tally – helping his side through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Having earned a call up to Louis van Gaal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, Gakpo has been equally as impressive in a Netherlands shirt.

Since making his national team debut in the summer of 2021, he has scored three goals in nine appearances – the vast majority of which he has played as an attacking midfielder.

Hailed by journalist Sam Tighe as ‘sensational’ for a recent international display against Belgium, Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders has been extremely impressed by the winger.

As per Dutch journalist Hans Kraay and ESPN, Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man has claimed ‘Gakpo is our missing link’.

With the likes of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota hoping to return to Liverpool’s side after the World Cup, the 23-year-old Dutchman isn’t really a necessity at Anfield.

However, with the player’s huge potential and his current form, Gakpo would deservedly take a spot in the Reds’ starting XI.

Therefore, with the ever-growing need for greater quality in depth, his arrival on Merseyside would be a brilliant coup for the club.
