One prominent figure at Liverpool is eager to sign Cody Gakpo, according to a Dutch journalist. The PSV star should be available.
Dutch reporter Hans Kraay Jr told ESPN this week that Liverpool want Cody Gakpo. Or more specifically, coach Pep Lijnders wants him.
“Lijnders has said: ‘Gakpo is our missing link’,” said Kraay Jr. “He is taken very seriously at Liverpool and he is one of the few people [Jurgen] Klopp listens to.”
Now, Kraay didn’t only say this to ESPN – he was directly talking to PSV Eindhoven Sporting Director Marcel Brands. He wanted to know if this is the kind of deal Brands might push through.
“Liverpool is a club that is always very focused,” replied Brands. “Sometimes they get players for the next season in November.
“Would they be a good partner to send Gakpo in the summer? Yes, that’s right.”

Now, Brands doesn’t suggest for a second that he’s heard of the interest himself. He doesn’t exactly rule it out, admittedly, but the claim is firmly from Kraay Jr here.
Reports from the Netherlands suggest that Gakpo is very much for sale, too. De Telegraaf suggest £26m could get him as PSV need the money.
That would be a bargain. Gakpo is a magnificent talent, ripping up the Eredivisie and playing like a star. £26m feels like a steal.

The only real problem is where he’d play at Liverpool. Gakpo likes the left-wing, where the Reds boast plenty of options. Perhaps a position change could work?
Gakpo might fit the False 9 well, for instance. There’s an outside chance Liverpool could convert him into midfield, too. Either way – they’d have to change something or he’s struggling for games against Luis Diaz.
Saying that, we still hope Liverpool find a way to sign Gakpo. £26m would make him one of the best signings of 2023.
