Harvey Elliott knows he won’t stay in Liverpool’s first team, despite some incredible form this season. The teenager shone this weekend.

Harvey Elliott put in an excellent performance on Saturday as Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1. We came away thinking it was a message for the England setup – here’s a young player who will be knocking on the door after the World Cup.

Given Elliott has zero England caps, it was always highly unlikely that he’d get the nod for Qatar. Especially as his position is one where Gareth Southgate boasts plenty of options.

But going forward? He’ll have a look at Elliott. The 19-year-old has looked great all season and could soon become one of the most important players at Liverpool.

Not that Elliott is even close to getting carried away. He admitted after the win over Southampton that there’s no expectation of staying in Liverpool’s first team. He’s not experienced enough for that – yet.

“Yeah, absolutely [this is what I dreamed of] but at the same time we need to understand that I’m still young and am going to be rotated a lot as well,” said Elliott, per Liverpoolfc.com. “There is always going to be that rotation.

“But I just need to make sure that when I am in the team or coming off the bench I am performing and doing the best I can for the team, just making sure I am applying myself in training to show the gaffer that I am trusted and that I can play.”

Elliott’s mentality has always been remarkable. That was clear during his first real pre-season at Liverpool, and James Milner has highlighted it before, too. He’s always understood his role, his age, and a need for patience.

So once again, Elliott, who is one of Liverpool’s lowest earners on around £40k-a-week (per Capology) completely gets it. His self-awareness is incredible, in all truth, and something you rarely see from any player. Let alone a teenager.

And Elliott is a teenager with a growing reputation, too. His performance continue to improve and while he may be in the ‘rotation’ right now, he won’t be by the end of the season. He’s the future of Liverpool’s midfield and a player who will be a star in the first team before long.
