Harvey Elliott was once of Liverpool’s best players as they earned back-to-back Premier League wins today.

The Reds beat Southampton 3-1, with Elliott pulling the strings in midfield. Playing alongside Thiago Alcantara and a rejuvenated Fabinho, Elliott didn’t look out of place at all.

In fact, the 19-year-old actually outshone them both. He provided perhaps the outstanding moment of the game – a delightful lofted through ball to Darwin Nunez, to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead.

But it wasn’t just the assist. Elliott was excellent all game. His confidence on the ball seems to growing with every passing appearance.

Always silky in possession, the teenager has now started to add goals and assists to his game, too. With the spotlight now shifting to the national teams, Elliott must feel that an England call-up isn’t far away.

Elliott making himself hard to ignore

There had been one or two tentative calls for Elliott to be included in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for Qatar.

But, really, it’s a surprise that those calls weren’t a little louder. The youngster has now played a part in every single Liverpool game this season, bar one.

In several of those, including the one today, Elliott has been one of the star performers.

At just nineteen, there aren’t too many players out there doing what he is. He may have been taken off with a little under 20 minutes to play today, but he did so to a standing Anfield ovation.

Rather than an indication of any deficiency from Elliott, the substitution was more an acknowledgment that he had started to tire after a mammoth shift.

Hopefully, Liverpool won’t need to lean so heavily on Harvey throughout the second-half of this campaign. But given what he’s been showing recently, there’s an argument that he’s now in Liverpool’s best XI.

This won’t be a surprise to Jurgen Klopp, who called him ‘incredible’ after Elliott injected life into Liverpool’s young side in midweek. Keep earning those kinds of plaudits, and there’s surely no way Southgate can ignore him any longer.

So, he may have missed out on this World Cup. But, right now, your money should be on Elliott making the next one.
