Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson has claimed that it’s a ‘huge honour’ to be called up for England’s World Cup squad today.
The Reds skipper was named as part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament in Qatar. And taking to Instagram shortly after the announcement, Henderson gave his reaction.
“Huge honour! We will give everything to make the country proud,” wrote the 32-year-old.
Henderson is set to play in his third World Cup, having been part of the England squad in both 2014 and 2018. Only Raheem Sterling can match that from the current squad.
Despite a long debate over his inclusion, Trent Alexander-Arnold also made the final cut. There was disappointment for Joe Gomez though, as the centre-back failed to do enough to impress Southgate.
Henderson still with so much to offer
Henderson’s inclusion in the England squad today is well deserved. The veteran may not be the most glamourous of players, but he’s still got plenty to offer.
As evidenced by Southgate’s decision to call-up Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, England don’t have too much in central midfield, either.
Beyond the talents of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, the Three Lions are a little limited in the position.
As a result, it would be good to see Henderson given some starts in Qatar. He is back to full fitness after a couple of recent struggles and is a much more experienced option than Bellingham or Rice.

Whether he starts or not, though, you can bet that the Liverpool captain will be a big presence for England.
His leadership skills arguably surpass his technical skills at this point. That might sound like a back-handed compliment, but it isn’t meant to be.
While still an excellent footballer in his own right, Hendo’s qualities as a captain really are priceless. It may be Harry Kane, not Henderson who has the possibility of lifting the World Cup trophy, in all but official title though, the Liverpool man is the leader of this squad.
Go get em, Hendo!
