Report: Liverpool ready to move to sign ‘incredible’ 19-year-old Spaniard who very nearly joined Barcelona

Liverpool are hoping to beat Barcelona to the signing of young Las Palmas midfielder Alberto Moleiro.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who claim that the Reds are preparing a January move for the 19-year-old.

As a result of interest from Barca, Liverpool are reportedly looking to ‘get ahead’ with a winter bid. Moleiro is said to have a £26m release clause in his contract. This will supposedly double should Las Palmas earn promotion this season.

While Liverpool are said to unwilling to pay such a fee, it’s said to be an even bigger problem for Barca.

This could reportedly put the Reds in pole position should they make a move in the New Year. Las Palmas are claimed to be looking for the full release clause to let Moleiro leave though, whereas Liverpool would prefer to negotiate.

Moleiro catching Klopp’s eye

This isn’t the first story we’ve seen about Liverpool making a move for Moleiro. Over the weekend, the Reds’ interest was also noted by AS.

They claimed that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the attacking midfielder and will lead Liverpool’s push for him.

Should they end up coming to the table though, it’s unlikely that Barca will let them take Moleiro quietly.

As per Goal, the teenager was close to joining the Catalan club at the end of last season. However, Barca’s well-publicised financial struggles put paid to a deal.

That could leave the door open for Liverpool, who badly need to bring down the age of their squad.

Watching Moleiro, it’s easy to see why Klopp would be interested in him. He’s a nippy little midfielder who has excellent technique. He was even described as being ‘incredible’ by teammate Nuke Mfulu via Tinta Amarilla.

But for our money, Liverpool don’t need another player of the youngster’s profile. In Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, they already boast three prospects with a similar skillset.

Perhaps Moleiro will end up being an upgrade on that trio. For now, though, Liverpool’s transfer funds should be concentrated elsewhere.
