Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of young Spanish forward Alberto Moleiro.
That’s according to AS, who claim that the Reds boss has received ‘very good reports’ of the 19-year-old from his scouts.
As a result, Liverpool are now said to be in the mix to sign Moleiro from La Liga 2 side Las Palmas.
However, Klopp and Liverpool will reportedly face big competition for the teenager. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are claimed to have tried to sign Moleiro last summer. Borussia Dortmund are also said to have made an ‘important movement’ recently.
Any club that wants to sign the Spaniard might have to do it soon, though. That’s because his reported release clause of around £26m will supposedly double should Las Palmas earn promotion to La Liga during 2022/23.
Liverpool looking beyond the stats
Looking at Moleiro’s basic stats for this season, and it’s difficult to see why any club would pay £26m for him.
0 goals and three assists in 13 La Liga 2 games isn’t the kind of form that usually attracts the kind of clubs being mentioned here.
But as we know, football isn’t just about stats. More often than not, it’s a wise idea to watch a player to see what they can truly offer.
And watching Moleiro is a delight. The youngster looks to be the kind of attacking midfielder who can pick up intelligent positions with his eyes closed.
His touch looks to be light and tight, and his weight of pass is already excellent.
So, these clubs would obviously be paying for potential rather than the finished product. At this juncture, that isn’t really something Liverpool can afford to be doing too much.
The Reds already have Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho amongst their squad. As good a talent as he may be, Moleiro doesn’t look to possess too much that that trio don’t.
Unless they can get him for a good price, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will pursue this one.
