Fenway Sports Group have already been approached by a potential buyer since putting Liverpool FC up for sale.

That’s what’s reported in the Financial Times, who claim at least one interested party have come forward over making a possible deal with the Reds’ American owners.

According to Forbes, the Merseyside club are valued at £3.6billion. This makes Liverpool the fourth-most expensive team in world football, coming in behind Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are valued upwards of £4.4 billion, and tantalisingly close behind third-place Manchester United, who are worth £3.7billion.

FSG receive their first approach to buy Liverpool

Despite making the move to put the club up on the market to sell, The Times report FSG aren’t necessarily trying to actively offload the Reds.

Instead, they claim the owners are attempting to figure out Liverpool’s true valuation if they were to sell, after Chelsea was sold for £4.25billion back in May.

However, this wouldn’t appear to make much financial sense. If FSG are testing the waters ahead of a potential sale in the near future, their bargaining position would be much stronger if they were publicly reluctant to part ways with their ownership of the club.

Putting Liverpool up for sale, without the intent to sell imminently, seems to be premature. With Chelsea’s £4.25billion selling price, it would be fair to say the Reds should come in at a similar level on the market. This would be assumed by the club’s low level of debt and the high level of income generated each year.

Therefore, FSG may be hoping to receive more than Forbes’ £3.6billion valuation, with Chelsea going for significantly more during the summer.

Either way, the first approach to buy the club did not take long to come to fruition. However, at the moment, FSG’s true position remains to be clear, so watch this space going forward.
