Fenway Sports Group may be testing the waters by putting Liverpool FC up for sale, according to journalist David Ornstein on The Athletic Football Podcast.

In a shock statement, it was revealed the Merseyside club had been put up for sale by its American owners.

Having decided against opportunities to sell in the past, FSG have now had a full sales presentation produced for interested parties, as they look to invite offers for the Reds.

Taking to The Athletic Football Podcast, Ornstein has provided further details surrounding this surprising news, also sharing a potential reason as to why the owners may have decided to put Liverpool up for sale.

“Our understanding that Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have put the club up for sale.

“It’s believed they’ve distributed a full sales presentation to interested parties and also contracted the services of the banks Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan to assist in what they described as an evaluation process.

“That means it’s not clear if a deal is going to be done, or that this is merely an exploratory exercise as a testing the water. We will have to wait and see on that front.

“But they have released a statement to us admitting that under the right terms and conditions, they would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interest of Liverpool.

“And in the meantime, they have reiterated their commitment to the club on and off the pitch.”

FSG put Liverpool up for sale

When looking at the current economic state, FSG’s decision to sell Liverpool appears to have come at a rather strange time.

Having had interest in the £3.6billion-valued club before, it doesn’t make much sense that the American owners would decide to take a hit on the sale of the club just months later, with the pound at an all-time low against the US Dollar.

With Jurgen Klopp’s squad ageing, investment is desperately needed if the Reds are to continue competing at the highest level – both domestically and continentally.

At times in the past, FSG have received strong criticism for their last of investment in the squad. This has been a frequent complaint as of late, as the owners decided against signing a new midfielder this summer as they would rather wait even longer to potentially welcome Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund next summer.

Ornstein’s suggestion that FSG could be testing the waters by putting the club up for sale, is an interesting proposition.

With the level of interest that emerged when Chelsea were put up for sale by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the American owners may be waiting to see how much of an interest Liverpool generate when they’re put on the market.

This would allow for a swifter sale when they truly do want to exit from the club, especially at a time when it makes more financial sense to do so.

Regardless, it really isn’t that clear at the moment as to FSG’s real motivation by the recent move.
