Alisson Becker has claimed that Liverpool fans keep reminding him of his winning goal against West Brom in 2021.
The goal was one of the most unforgettable moments of the Jurgen Klopp era so far. And speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Alisson said that Liverpool supporters make sure he’s reminded of it, almost 18 months on.
“People still tag me on Twitter or Instagram on the video of that goal,” smiled the Reds ‘keeper. “It was something incredible, one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life, scoring that goal, and for all it represented for the team at that moment.”
Crucial in securing Champions League football for Liverpool at the end of a dismal season, it was a massive goal. That the Reds went all the way to the final the following year gave it even greater significance.
But perhaps the most incredible thing about Alisson’s goal was that it came just three months on from the tragic death of his father. The poignance of it all brought the Brazilian to tears, and many supporters with him, too.
Remembering Alisson’s incredible moment
On a season that’s turning into a desperate one for Liverpool, it’s important to remember special moments of the past.
Over the last few years, few moments have carried such resonance as Alisson’s goal. Not just for the goal itself, which was perfectly executed, but for the power of the moment.
Alisson is one of the most celebrated people in Liverpool’s squad. A great player, no doubt, but also a genuinely humble man.
To see him lose his father in such awful circumstances will have hurt everyone connected to the club. If one player deserved such a moment, it was Alisson.
Since then, the 30-year-old has arguably got even better. Already one of the world’s best, Alisson has elevated his game over the last season-and-a-bit.
With others around him failing to hit top gear this campaign, the big Brazilian has remained an absolute constant. Where Liverpool would be without him this season doesn’t bear thinking about.
Thankfully, it isn’t something we’ll have to contemplate any time soon. Alisson is signed up to Liverpool until 2027, and seems as happy as can be at the club.
No doubt he’ll have many brilliant moments to come. But for all the circumstances surrounding it, he surely won’t ever top this one.
