Robbie Fowler has claimed that Liverpool have an ‘incredible’ talent in Darwin Nunez.
Nunez has come to life at Liverpool over the last month or so. And speaking to BBC Sport, Fowler gave his take on the Uruguayan’s beginning to life at Anfield.
“We’ve seen enough to know that he will score goals. He looks like he’s too eager to please but the signs are very, very good. So far he’s been easy on the eye. The fans have taken to him already and when you get appreciation like that then it drives you on to perform that little bit better,” said the Reds icon.
“He’s obviously still a young lad and he’s probably still developing his game. He’s maybe struggled in terms of amount of games. He got himself sent off and he’s not really had a run required for a striker.
“Players rely on momentum and he looks like that player. He’s scored a few goals already and he’s going to score more. I just think he needs to calm down and relax in front of goal.
“What I do like about him is that he has an incredible work ethic and that is what Liverpool should always be about. We could be seeing a relative star in the making.”
Nunez on a good footing at Liverpool
It’s hard to disagree with any of Fowler’s points here. After a difficult start, Nunez has come into his own over recent times at Anfield.
His record of seven goals in 15 games is massively encouraging, if not absolutely amazing. But when you consider that those seven goals have come from just eight starts, it begins to look very good indeed.
As Nunez gets his feet under the table in a brand-new club, country and culture, he’s only going to get better.
In any case, the 23-year-old looks well on course to hit something between 15 and 20 goals for Liverpool this season.
Erling Haaland’s monstrous figures may have distorted expectations, but that would still be a pleasing return for a first season.
Fowler should know, he was one of Liverpool’s best ever goal poachers. Darwin is a different kind of player, but it’s good that the man nicknamed ‘God’ by Reds fans can see the finisher in the young forward.
The chaos that Nunez brings has already endeared him massively to the Liverpool fans. Now that he’s adding regular goals to that passion and unpredictability, he has built a solid platform to build from.
