Paul Merson saw something from Darwin Nunez against Ajax that convinced him about the Liverpool player. Nunez was in the spotlight.
Darwin Nunez grabbed headlines once again with his performance against Ajax on Wednesday. Liverpool eventually won 3-0, with the Uruguayan finding the scoresheet. That’s now four straight starts with a goal.
But this is Nunez, so there was also a moment of bizarre frustration. The 23-year-old had an open goal with which to score before half-time but crashed his effort off the post. It was hard to believe.
Maybe that’s a good sign, though. Paul Merson certainly thinks it is and he saw enough against Ajax to show him that Nunez ‘will come good’.
“Darwin Nunez has been a bit stop-start this season, but I think he’ll be a success,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “My only worry is his link-up play – he didn’t even see Mohamed Salah’s run against Man City and when you play for a team like Liverpool, you need to be able to pick those passes.
“What I do like about him is that he doesn’t shy off. He missed a sitter the other day, but he still scored after that. It might take him some time, but he’ll come good for Liverpool.”
Paul Merson likes Darwin Nunez
The important thing is that Nunez gets lots of chances. He usually ends up with two or three per game, even if he’s not converting them all.

You’d also prefer that to a player who is getting one chance per game, though. If Nunez can start finishing a little more clinically, he’ll score for fun. That’s abundantly clear.
And given he’s still only 23 and has been at Liverpool for a few months, we’re confident that things will click in that regard. Nunez appears to threaten from absolutely everywhere, so putting the easy ones away would make him an unbelievable striker.
What we’re seeing already is fantastic but there’s more to come.
