Report: Liverpool now in direct contact to sign ‘top-class’ centre-back who almost joined PSG last summer

Liverpool have made contact with the representatives of Milan Skriniar over a potential move next summer.

That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Reds are one of a number of teams interested in the defender.

Skriniar could be available on a free transfer having so far failed to agree on a new deal at Inter Milan. That opportunity has reportedly aroused the interest of several top sides, Liverpool being one of them.

Along with the Reds, all of the Premier League’s ‘big 6’ clubs are said to be in the frame. Having seen a last-minute deal to sign Skriniar collapse in the summer, PSG are also claimed to remain ‘very interested’ in the 27-year-old.

Inter, for their part, are still reportedly determined to keep the centre-back. The Italian’s CEO, Beppe Marotta, is quoted by 90min as saying – “As far as Skriniar, who is absolutely top-class both on and off the pitch, I hope we can agree a new deal very much. I’m very optimistic that the negotiations can reach a conclusion by November 13.”

Liverpool on the hunt for a top-class bargain?

As Liverpool start to contemplate their long-term future without Virgil Van Dijk, Skriniar could be an interesting option.

There’s no doubting the Slovakian’s quality. Having played at Inter for the past five years, he became a bedrock of their Scudetto winning team of 2021.

He has consistently attracted interest from the top sides around Europe. That has previously included Liverpool, who were claimed to be scouting Skriniar at the start of 2022.

In a summer where Liverpool are expected to go big on a midfielder, bringing in a quality free signing could be smart.

However, with free signings comes the obvious expectations of massive wages. Given his age and experience, Skriniar would also probably be anticipating a spot in the starting XI. Right now, Liverpool perhaps can’t offer either of those things.

A new centre-back or two is likely to be on the agenda for Liverpool over the coming windows. With Joel Matip and Virgil Van Dijk both thirty-one and Joe Gomez failing to convince consistently, it’s something that needs to be looked at. But right now, it isn’t a necessity.

Liverpool have been stung in the past by not adding to their squad at opportune times, though. Adding a player like Skrinar now, for nothing, would mean avoiding a potentially costly deal further down the line when things are a little more desperate.

If they don’t do it, it seems that one of their Premier League rivals probably will.
