Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has admitted that he should have saved Crysencio Summerville’s winning goal for Leeds United tonight.
Speaking to Sky Sports via BBC Sport, Alisson said that he could have done better for the late winner.
“We have to think a lot about what we did wrong tonight. The two goals we conceded we shouldn’t concede. I should have saved the second goal,” said the 30-year-old.
“We had opportunities up front. We are really disappointed for this result. This is the Premier League. We don’t have time to breathe. We have to fight game after game. When you have bad results at home when you need points it’s frustrating but we cannot allow to have that frustration in the next game.”
One of the most disappointing results of a season that is quickly coming off the rails.
Alisson not the culprit for Liverpool
To blame Alisson for Summerville’s winner would probably be a little harsh on the goalie. But such is the Brazilian’s super high standards, perhaps he could have just about got to it.
Alisson did get something on the toe-poke, but it wasn’t enough. Summerville took the strike on quickly before the goalkeeper could get set.
It would have been a remarkable save, but then again, we’ve seen Alisson make them so many times.
Instead of the £67m man though, there were several Liverpool players guilty of not doing enough. Curtis Jones and James Milner should have stopped the cross, before all of Thiago, Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez were too slow to react.
Symptomatic of a display where Liverpool just couldn’t match Leeds for intensity. Jurgen Klopp’s players looked out on their feet from the moment Rodrigo capitalised on Joe Gomez’s horrendous first-half mistake.
Where do Liverpool go from here, then? Back-to-back defeats to two sides who occupied the relegation spots at the start of the respective games.
It isn’t even the results which are the most worrying thing, though. Rather, Liverpool just look completely and utterly ragged. There’s no cohesion and far too many players appear to have gone quickly past their best.
It’s typical of Alisson to hold his hands up, but he’s been the Reds best player by far this campaign. It’s those in-front of him who have so much more to answer for.
