Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is the best in his position in the world right now.
The former England defender was part of BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool’s game against Nottingham Forest this afternoon.
And analysing the recent displays of the Reds goalie pre-game, Ferdinand said that there’s been no one better than Alisson this season.
“I think you could argue that he’s one of, if not the most important signing Liverpool have made in this time of success.,” he said. “Before he came, the struggles they had in that area were crazy. He comes in and absolutely solidifies that position and makes everyone else feel much more comfortable. The team perform so much better when he’s in that goal. Fabulous ‘keeper.
“I think he’s up there at the moment [as the best in the world]. Right now, I’d say yeah. He’s winning them games, not many goalkeepers are doing that.”
Alisson keeps Liverpool on course
Alisson has had a brilliant week between the Liverpool sticks, as he reinforces his reputation as the best around.
Firstly, he performed well and claimed the all-important assist for Mohamed Salah’s winner against Manchester City. He then put in another excellent display midweek against West Ham, saving a penalty as Liverpool squeezed another 1-0 win.
So far, he hasn’t had too much to do against Forest, gobbling up a few shots that have been hit straight at him. He’s on course to claim a third clean sheet in a row with the score at 0-0.
Jurgen Klopp once again chopped and changed his back four at the City Ground, with James Milner and Andy Robertson returning to the side.
Injuries and a hectic fixture schedule mean that Alisson is playing with a different back four every game now. What a relief it is then, to know that the Brazilian is a constant in the side.
He may have beaten to the Ballon d’Or Yashin award by Thibaut Courtois, but there’s no one Liverpool fans would rather have.
As many Reds players performances have dipped off this season, Alisson’s have remained strong. Without his brilliance, Liverpool could be even further from where they want to be.
How many times have we said that over the last four-and-a-bit years. What a player, what a goalkeeper. The best around.
