Bayern’s reported interest in Ilkay Gundogan may come as good news for Liverpool. The Reds should find an opportunity here.

90min report that Bayern Munich want Ilkay Gundogan. The German midfielder’s contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the season and the Bavarians believe they can take advantage.

Gundogan made his name in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund before earning a move to City. The midfielder has excelled in Manchester, too, but may fancy a return to his homeland.

It’s news that may be welcome on Merseyside, too. This is Liverpool’s opportunity to grab Konrad Laimer.

Bayern’s Ilkay Gundogan interest and Konrad Laimer

Laimer is another midfielder whose contract expires in the summer. He’s also another linked with Bayern – they’re supposedly eyeing a free transfer.

But do they have room for both? That’s a big question and one that Liverpool can use. The Reds also want Laimer, according to Christian Falk.

In fact, the Athletic reported in September that Liverpool tried to sign Laimer for this season. They couldn’t convince RB Leipzig to sell, however, and will try again as his contract expires.

Unlike Bayern, though, there’s no question that Liverpool can offer a prominent place for Laimer. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract, after all, and are expected to move on.

And so here’s Liverpool’s great chance to sell themselves to Laimer. He can be a primary target as Bayern focus attention on Gundogan – and what a target he’d be.

We’ve written before about the Austrian being arguably the best pressing midfielder in Europe. Laimer truly is a special talent and one who seems like a perfect fit for Liverpool. He’d slot right into their midfield, delivering the no.1 trait Jurgen Klopp wants in there.

And if Bayern’s attention is turning elsewhere, Liverpool have their chance to get him.
