‘We’ve let him down’: Andy Robertson says Liverpool’s players have failed their 30-year-old teammate this term

Andy Robertson believes Liverpool’s players have ‘let down’ Alisson Becker this season. The goalkeeper has been doing all he can.

Andy Robertson believes Alisson Becker is the ‘best in the world’ – but that Liverpool aren’t letting him show that this season. Though, the Brazilian found a way to do so against Manchester City on Sunday.

Alisson produced the assist for Liverpool’s goal, picking out Mohamed Salah with a long ball after claiming a City free-kick. The quick thinking was fantastic, and something James Milner highlighted after the game.

The goalkeeper also made a couple of wonderful saves to keep Erling Haaland out. There was a reaction save after Alisson had arguably come out too far and the Norwegian attempted to chip him. Then an even better stop as Haaland fired a slow shot to the keeper’s right.

All in all, Robertson felt this was a performance that showed Alisson to be the world’s best. It’s his teammates who are stopping him from showing it every week, however.

“I think Ali’s the best in the world for sure in what he does,” Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com. “We’ve all probably let him down this season in that he’s faced too many shots, he’s had to be making too many saves.

“I think he’ll be a lot happier [after the win and clean sheet].”

Alisson this season

There’s a very strong case that Alisson has been Liverpool’s best player this season. The fact he’s had so few clean sheets simply isn’t his fault – the Reds are just leakier than they’ve been defensively for years.

In fact, there have been games where Liverpool concede multiple goals and we still come away saying Alisson played well. The 3-3 draw with Brighton could have been a 5 or 6-3 defeat if not for the 30-year-old.

We certainly agree with Robertson that Alisson is the world’s best. Let’s just hope he’s allowed to show it a little more often going forward.
