Liverpool are ready to firm up their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong in the new year.

That’s according to ESPN, who claim that the Reds have already made contact with the player’s representatives.

De Jong doggedly refused to be forced out of Barcelona this summer. But having only started five games this season, Liverpool reportedly believe that the 26-year-old has softened his stance on a move.

As a result, Liverpool are said to be ‘ready to lead the race’ for a January move. Crucially though, they’re far from alone in their interest.

Manchester United, who De Jong refused to join in the summer, are reportedly back and ready to try again. Meanwhile Chelsea, who also attempted a last-ditch move for the Dutchman, are also very keen on him, too.

Liverpool ready to compete for De Jong

De Jong’s will-he-won’t-he saga with Man United during the transfer window was exhausting. Even as a neutral, it got to the point of sheer tedium.

In case you’d forgotten though, United did have a deal agree with Barcelona for the player. All things told that would have equalled around £68m.

According to the Daily Star, The Old Trafford club were also ready to make De Jong the highest paid player at the club. For a club who employ David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, that’s quite the offer.

It’s neigh on impossible that Liverpool would be willing to offer those kinds of figures to the Holland international. They’re keen to bring in Jude Bellingham and would likely want to pay lower wages to any additional new players.

In that respect, the presence of Chelsea and United means it’s hard to see this one happening for the Reds.

Chelsea need midfield reinforcements just as badly as Liverpool and are seemingly ready to pay whatever it takes to get them.

United meanwhile may now become much more attractive to De Jong as his game time in Barcelona fades.

You get the sense that the De Jong saga still has a little way to run. He’d no doubt a great option for Liverpool if he’s available, but the finances might make it too much of a stretch.
