Liverpool want to beat Manchester United to Frenkie de Jong, according to reports. The Dutchman could be an ideal signing.
This comes from Sport. They claim that Liverpool have their eyes on Frenkie de Jong and could look to sign him in 2023.
It would be a summer transfer, apparently, if the Reds can make it work. They’d also need to beat Manchester United to the player – the old rivals have chased him for almost a year now.
There should be major upheaval in the Reds’ midfield next summer. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract. Arthur’s loan spell expires, too, with little suggestion that Liverpool will buy him outright.
The club could find itself with both the money and the space to sign De Jong from Barcelona.
Liverpool want Frenkie de Jong
We hoped Liverpool would push for De Jong in August but it turned out to be an impossible one. The player just didn’t want to leave Catalonia – where he’s been since his £65m transfer in 2019.
With so much talk around his exit, we certainly believe that he’s available next year. Liverpool have the space, too, and we think the Dutchman could be a genius signing.

De Jong boasts the experience that Liverpool need in midfield as the likes of Milner leave. But he’s also just 25 – right in and around his prime years. The Reds could easily get six or seven years out of him, making him the exact kind of signing they need.
We’d also back De Jong to play in both a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2, the two formations Liverpool are playing right now. His ability to drop deep and pass through the lines benefits other young midfielders like Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, too.
We love the idea and hope it’s as feasible as it sounds next year. De Jong could end up looking like genius transfer business – for the right price.
