Liverpool would prioritise signing Jude Bellingham over the potentially available Kylian Mbappe next year.
That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Speaking to The Football Terrace, Jacobs said that in a choice between Mbappe or Bellingham, Liverpool would likely go for the midfielder.
“Given that Liverpool want Jude Bellingham, they’re not going to get Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe financially speaking, and I think Bellingham will be Liverpool’s priority over Kylian Mbappe at this stage,” he said.
The journalist also gave something of a positive update in this regard. Jacobs said that if Real Madrid were to enter the race for Mbappe as expected, this could potentially clear the way for Liverpool to land Bellingham.
“From Real Madrid’s point of view, if they get Mbappe they also may not get Bellingham. So, ironically if Liverpool want Bellingham and so do Real Madrid, and then Real want Mbappe, if the opportunity comes to get Mbappe you might find that that allows Liverpool a clearer path to Bellingham. But there’s so much interest in him that either way that’s going to be an open race,” he said.
Cooler heads set to prevail at Anfield
In theory, this would make sense. There’s really no way that either club could afford both Mbappe and Bellingham.
But then again, Madrid aren’t just any other club. Their president, Florentino Perez, would no doubt absolutely love to secure the signing of two of football’s best young players.
From a financial point of view, it seems impossible. But making the impossible a reality is Mr Perez’s speciality in the transfer market.
For Liverpool, it isn’t feasible. Getting one of them over the line feels a bit of a stretch even for the Reds.
If it’s one or the other though, it has to be Bellingham. Mbappe would be a huge statement from Liverpool and it does seem like the Frenchman is open to the idea of the move.
But Liverpool’s midfield is their problem. They’ve been crying out for a quality new player in the middle of the park for too many years already.
If the rumours are to be believed, this is in part down to a willingness to sign Bellingham next summer. It would be a pretty major decision for Liverpool to tear that up and throw the funds at Mbappe instead.
For other owners, that may sound like something that could happen. This is FSG though, cooler heads usually prevail in the market. Bellingham’s deal has been years in the making, he has to be the top target, whatever happens.
