‘Serious contender’: Journalist now shares who is more likely to get Mbappe, Chelsea or Liverpool

Kylian Mbappe would be interested in a move to Liverpool or Chelsea if he were to leave PSG next year.

That’s according to French journalist Julien Laurens. Speaking to Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast, Laurens did however suggest that Liverpool have less chance of landing the superstar than their London counterparts.

“Liverpool, which is a club that Kylian really likes, they can’t afford him right now. They can’t pay that money, and this is not a position that they want to strengthen, that they need to strengthen. It’s the midfield that they’re looking at players right now. So, no Liverpool,” he said.

“I think Chelsea is a very serious contender. Because we know that Todd Boehly wants the big names, wants the headlines, wants the superstars. Hence why he wanted to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. Mbappe ticks a lot of the boxes that Todd Boehly wants and certainly they would have the money to sign someone like him.”

Liverpool baulking, but Mbappe could be worth it

So, Laurens has, in effect, ruled Liverpool out of the running for Mbappe here. It won’t be any great surprise to hear that FSG are baulking at the money involved. But it is a bit of a shame.

There has been so much noise around a potential move to Liverpool. It’s clear that the Frenchman really does have a soft spot for the Reds.

But as something of a reprise, Laurens does hammer home the point that Mbappe is desperate to leave Paris. Although there have been reports to the contrary, the journalist claims that Real Madrid should be the favourites.

If Liverpool can get their act together though, then there could be a real opportunity here.

“Real Madrid are the favourite, but Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, they’re top clubs some of the best clubs in the world. Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Italian clubs all of that.

“So, if you’re Kylian right now, the only thing you want is to leave PSG. That’s it, the relationship is broken with Paris, he doesn’t want to be there anymore,” said Laurens. “They will try to change his mind, they might do so, but he’s so stubborn so good luck with that, he wants to leave.

“I think anybody who can bring him a project where the money is right for PSG, for him, where the project is right, the team, the manager, everything fits with what he wants, I think he will be interested. So that could be Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus, I don’t know. Anyone really that can bring him on the table a good project, financially, football wise, parent wise, everything you want, he will be listening for sure.”

Some will argue that Mbappe’s attitude would make him undesirable to Jurgen Klopp’s team. His vast wages would also be a real, real stretch for Liverpool.

But if there’s any way that the Reds can snare one of the very best players of this generation, they should perhaps do everything they can.
