Klopp can build the ultimate 4-4-2: Three reasons Liverpool should sign Kylian Mbappé

Liverpool are reportedly a team who could sign Kylian Mbappé after the player asked to leave PSG. Here are three reasons it could make sense.

Marca, among many others, report that Kylian Mbappé has requested a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. He feels there are broken promises and wants a move as early as January.

PSG won’t sell to Real Madrid, however. That leaves Liverpool as arguably the only viable option for the Frenchman should he push for a move.

And on the face of it, this one is too crazy to work. But maybe the Reds can justify it – so here are three reasons Liverpool should sign Kylian Mbappé.

Liverpool should sign Kylian Mbappé

The player

It’s Kylian Mbappé. That, on its own, is a compelling reason to ignore everything else and try to make it happen. He’s one of the best players on the planet and there is literally no better signing.

Liverpool would have their Erling Haaland answer. In fact, Mbappé is the only answer to Haaland as arguably an even better forward than Manchester City’s Norwegian. If the Reds want to compete at that level, here’s the ‘easiest’ way.

The status

Liverpool are seeing right now that they could easily slip from the top table. The Reds are in poor form and their reputation is taking a hit – and they’re struggling to compete for trophies already.

Signing a player like Mbappé keeps you at that top table. He’s a superstar, one of the biggest names on the planet and guarantees a level of status.

Yes, he’d be expensive – massively so – but you can argue that the guarantees he offers would make up for that. It’s also worth mentioning that Mbappé may view his potential status at Liverpool as financially beneficial.

Per Forbes, he’s the highest-earning player on the planet. Virtually all of that money comes from PSG, however, while other players include off-the-pitch earnings. Mohamed Salah actually earns more away from the pitch than Mbappé.

Simply by asking for an exit, Mbappé is acknowledging a paycut. No one but PSG can afford his current wages – not even close. But the extra profile at a bigger club would make up for some of that.

The system

If Liverpool did sign Mbappé, they’d have the two fastest players in Europe. Only the Frenchman ran faster than Darwin Nunez in the Champions League last season – so think about that. Mohamed Salah would be the third-fastest player in the Liverpool lineup.

And if Liverpool believe their 4-3-3 isn’t working, how about that for a 4-4-2? Mbappé could play wherever he wants, either on the left or as a striker off of Nunez. The Reds would have a forward line that pins every team to the edge of their own box, with forwards who naturally interchange.

The possibilities there are too much to ignore. Liverpool need to change their midfield anyway, so why not change it to suit the most dangerous forward line we’ve ever seen?
