Liverpool considered signing Yves Bissouma, according to reports. The player eventually moved to Tottenham Hotspur.
This comes from the Athletic. They claim Liverpool considered Yves Bissouma as a transfer before the player moved to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Spurs paid around £25m to sign the player from Brighton. The Reds, it seems, didn’t see the right value in the deal, with Manchester United and Real Madrid doing similar.
Liverpool considered Yves Bissouma
Liverpool did look at other midfielders in 2022, of course. There were links to Aurélien Tchouaméni before his move to Real Madrid. It’s an open secret that they wanted Jude Bellingham, too – Borussia Dortmund just wouldn’t sell.
As it happened, Liverpool waited until the final moments of the transfer window to sign a midfielder. They brought in Arthur on loan from Juventus. The Brazilian has barely featured, however, and is now out with an injury.
And so it does all make you wonder what Liverpool didn’t see in Bissouma. He’s a player they were linked with for some time, in fact, with the Athletic making that claim in the summer of 2021.

It reached a point where Ian Wright discussed the possibility on his podcast. He said Bissouma was ‘sensational’ and ‘tailor-made’ for Liverpool.
We were always on board with it, too. Bissouma looked like a great fit as a dynamic, defence-first midfielder who could do an excellent job.
It’s difficult to say what turned Liverpool away. Perhaps they see bigger opportunities and wanted to save the money for them. Maybe they just don’t rate him all that highly – Bissouma isn’t, admittedly, a regular for Spurs.
But as the midfield continues to struggle, Bissouma does feel like a missed opportunity. He’d have strengthened the squad while adding defensive quality that the midfield sorely lacks right now.
Were the chance to reappear, we do wonder if Liverpool would change their decision. As it is, we imagine they’re currently scouting players of a similar profile.
