Liverpool have already rekindled their interest in Wolves summer signing Matheus Nunes.

That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (02/10 page 78) who claim that Liverpool still hold a ‘keen interest’ in the 24-year-old.

It’s claimed that Liverpool made enquires with Nunes’ former club Sporting Lisbon this summer. But despite the player reportedly hoping the Reds would come in for him, they never did.

However, it’s now said that Liverpool are weighing up a bid next year. So too are Manchester City though, and The Mirror suggest that it would take a ‘huge’ bid to prise Nunes away from Molineux now.

Liverpool still admiring Nunes from afar

This looks like a story that could rumble all the way to next summer. Liverpool were long rumoured to be in for Nunes this summer. But despite him being available, they never firmed anything up.

Instead, it’s been claimed that they’ll keep an eye on his progress in the Premier League. For their part, Wolves are said to be aware that they may only keep the player for a single season.

If that were to pass, Liverpool would surely have to pay a lot more than the £42m paid to Sporting this summer. As a result, this one looks a little unlikely right at this moment.

Although in theory it makes sense, there remains a big question mark as to why Liverpool didn’t move forward during the summer.

Nunes has had flashes of excellence so far at Wolves. But he has also played all but two games for a side who have only scored three times all season and have just sacked their manager.

If Liverpool are to blow big money on him, they’ll need to see more than that.

Still, it’s early days, and the £85k-a-week star also looks likely to go to the World Cup this winter. Perform well there and it sounds like the Reds could be easily tempted to get their checkbook out next summer.
