'Unbelievably special': Gary Neville says Liverpool have a player who can become one of the all-time greats

Gary Neville had the highest of praise for Trent Alexander-Arnold and believes he can become the best right-back ever. “He’s a Cafu,” says Neville.

Gary Neville had a lot to say on Trent Alexander-Arnold as he talked in-depth on Monday Night Football. The former Manchester United right-back is understandably passionate about his position and, it turns out, about Alexander-Arnold.

There has been more attention on the Liverpool star than ever over the last few weeks. He’s been under intense pressure as the Reds struggle, with his defensive work coming under intense scrutiny.

And Neville sees the value in that. Alexander-Arnold has a lot to work on, he says. In fact, there are four ‘basic principles’ of full-back play that he wants to see the Scouser perfect.

Because should he do that, Neville says, we’ll be looking at the best right-back of all time.

“The hard part of the game, he’s doing,” said Neville. “No full-back that I’ve ever seen in this country can do what he can do.

“So if he can just work on those four basic things, and get those consistency elements with those things, we won’t just have one of the best attacking right-backs this country has ever produced. We’ll have probably the best right-back the world has ever produced.

“Because this is a Cafu. This is that level of full-back. This is something unbelievably special.”

It’s a big, big claim and one that’s certainly up for debate. Is it even possible to overtake Cafu and Carlos Alberto, given they’re World Cup-winning captains who could do it all?

At the end of the day, Neville is saying that if Alexander-Arnold learns to do it all, he’ll essentially be perfect. That’s hard to argue. The 23-year-old has won every major club trophy, made every Team of the Year, won individual awards and set records. He does things we’ve never seen before.

The big question is whether he can learn the defensive work. If he does, then Neville absolutely has a point – but it’s far from easy. There’s little doubt, though, that if Alexander-Arnold can improve even further, he’ll go down as an all-time great.
