Sepp van den Berg has serious ligament damage, according to Schalke 04. The on-loan Liverpool youngster went to hospital on Sunday.

Schalke 04 have confirmed that Sepp van den Berg suffered ‘serious ligament damage’ to his ankle against FC Augsburg on Sunday. The Dutchman left the pitch shortly into the second-half, with the club confirming a little while later that he’d gone straight to the hospital.

Now at least part of the diagnosis is in and it’s not good.

“Two players suffered injuries in the 3-2 defeat against FC Augsburg on Sunday (2nd October),” Schalke write on their website.

“Sepp van den Berg was diagnosed with a serious ligament injury, while Rodrigo Zalazar suffered a metatarsal fracture in the game against the Fuggerstädtern.

“The injuries mean that both players will be unavailable for the rest of Schalke’s competitive games this calendar year.”

Sepp van den Berg suffers ligament damage

It’s a massive blow to Van den Berg. This is supposed to be the season in which he proves himself at the very top level. Instead, he’s out until 2023 at the earliest.

And it does sound like it could be longer. The use of the word ‘serious’ is a worrying one and it doesn’t get much worse than damage to your ligaments.

All we can do is hope that recovery goes as well as possible and that Van den Berg can still play a role this season. He’s become such an exciting prospect over the last 18 months, shining for Preston North End and showing wonderful versatility.

We believe he could become a very useful addition to Liverpool’s squad – but this is a serious setback. We’ll be crossing our fingers that all goes to plan, then. Hopefully, Van den Berg returns to action with comfortin 2023.
