Schalke 04 confirm that Sepp van den Berg, on loan from Liverpool, has been taken to hospital. The young defender has a potential injury.

Schalke 04 say Sepp van den Berg has been taken to hospital after an apparently serious ankle injury. The Dutchman, who is on loan from Liverpool, went off on 53 minutes in his side’s 3-2 defeat against Augsburg.

Van den Berg rolled his ankle and the club confirmed 15 minutes later that he’d gone straight to the hospital.

“Sepp van den Berg is on the way to the hospital with a suspected ankle injury,” they wrote on Twitter. “We keep our fingers crossed for you, Sepp!”

It’s one that doesn’t sound good, then. Players going down without an impact rarely ends well and we’ll be crossing our fingers along with Schalke.

Van den Berg is one of the most interesting young players at Liverpool right now. He’s got the ability to play as a centre-back, a right-back and even a right-midfielder. It’s the kind of versatility you rarely see outside of James Milner and here’s Van den Berg doing it at 20.

And this is such a big season for him, too. A very successful 18 months at Preston North End earned the Dutchman a shot at top-flight football in Germany. We believe it’s exactly what he needs and Van den Berg could come out of this season as a hugely impressive player.

Potentially, he could be one that Liverpool use in their squad going forward. Now, though, it all depends on this ankle injury. It’ll be a big blow to Van den Berg’s development if this turns out to be serious.

So again, we’ll have our fingers crossed along with everyone else.
