‘Sort of in the same row’: Erling Haaland’s Dad explains exactly where Liverpool were in the transfer race

Liverpool were in the race for Erling Haaland, says his Dad. But they weren’t exactly high on the list, it seems.

Erling Haaland was one of the most talked-about transfers of the summer, with Manchester City snapping the player up. Or rather, City paid an absolute fortune to do so at over £200m, per the Telegraph.

Liverpool were never going to pay that but it does appear that they were in the race. Alfe Inge Haaland, father of Erling, explained in a recent documentary that the Reds were on the list.

Just not very high up on it.

“On our list, I think City is the best team,” he said, as translated by the Liverpool Echo. “[Bayern] Munich is number two. We have Real Madrid as number three, Paris Saint-Germain as number four.

“We also have some English teams other than City who are quite good … Liverpool and Chelsea. Also, there is Barcelona. They are sort of in the same row.”

Joint-fifth, then. It seems Liverpool would have needed City, Bayern, Real and PSG to bow out before they actually had a chance of signing Haaland.

And then we imagine Chelsea would have offered silly money compared to the Reds, if their summer was anything to go by. In other words, this one wasn’t happening without enormous slices of luck.

Fortunately, it seems the next hot transfer race could go Liverpool’s way. Jude Bellingham is at the centre of it, Haaland’s former Borussia Dortmund teammate.

Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are in the running – along with everyone else – and that more information should arrive after the World Cup. Hopefully, the Reds fare better when it comes to the Englishman as he’d be a truly sensational signing.

And one that doesn’t quite reach the same kind of money as City paid for Haaland.
