There have been strong rumours that Liverpool could sign the Argentine. But writing for Caught Offside, the transfer expert insisted that no one ‘close’ to Fernandez wants to talk about a potential move.
“We’ve heard a lot about Jude Bellingham, and now Enzo Fernandez is making headlines! Honestly, I think Liverpool will be linked with 20-30 midfielders in the next months as it’s public knowledge that they’re looking for a top midfielder in 2023,” said Romano.
“As for Enzo Fernandez, he has just arrived at Benfica, he’s focused on Benfica and on the World Cup – no one close to him wants to speak about a potential transfer now. Let’s see in the summer!
Fernandez earns international recognition
Fernandez has been quite heavily linked with a move to Liverpool since the end of the summer transfer window.
Having only joined Benfica before this season, there was no chance of him leaving so soon. But he certainly looks like a potential option for Liverpool next year.
His performances in Portugal have been so good in fact that he’s already been called up to the Argentina squad.
In a World Cup year, with just two previous U18 appearances behind him, that’s really quite remarkable.
Fernandez played in both his country’s games over the last week. With under two months until the tournament kicks off, he now has a real chance of making the squad.
Should he go to Qatar and impress, it could add considerably to his transfer value. The 21-year-old reportedly already has a release clause of over £100m (Diario Uno).
Of course, the price is never going to reach anything like that. But still, Benfica look set for a massive profit on the £16m they paid River Plate for him.
Whether or not Liverpool are in for him could depend on how high that fee goes. Big money looks to have been earmarked on the potential purchase of Jude Bellingham. Should the Reds miss out on the Englishman though, or even alongside him, Fernandez could be a definite option.
