Reported Liverpool transfer target Konrad Laimer has admitted that he loves watching the Reds play.
The RB Leipzig midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in the last days of the summer transfer window. And speaking to Servus Sport via Bild, Laimer spoke about Jurgen Klopp’s team.
“I’m generally a football fan. I generally like to watch the Premier League. I’ve always been a Liverpool fan,” said the 25-year-old.
Laimer then addressed suggestions that he’s waiting for Bayern Munich to come in for him next summer, when he’ll be a free agent.
“Certainly there are such thoughts. I don’t think such a club knocks every summer, it’s one of the best in the world. But you can’t change it anyway. I’m a guy who focuses on the here and now. If you think too much, you lose sight of the most important thing – and that’s playing football and getting better,” said the Austria international.
Laimer keeping his options open ahead of Bosman move
If reports are to be believed, then Liverpool tried their very hardest to bring Laimer to the club at the start of the month.
Prior to securing the loan signing of Arthur Melo, Laimer was said to be a top target. Unfortunately for them though, Leipzig reportedly refused to do business so close to the deadline.
But with the midfielder’s contract set to expire next year, he looks very likely to be available once more. Where he was said to be commanding at least a £25m fee in the summer (Kicker), he’ll be free to move for nothing next year.
Whether or not Liverpool do come back in for him is likely to depend on a number of factors. It’s suggested that Laimer has already set his heart on Bayern and a reunion with former coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Nagelsmann’s future currently looks less than certain, though. There’s a chance that the 35-year-old won’t be in Munich this time next year.
In that case, perhaps the door will open for Liverpool. They’re likely to need a couple of new faces in midfield. With plans to go big on Jude Bellingham firmly in place, Laimer could represent a much-needed value option.
From the player’s side, it sounds as though he’s keeping his options very much open. Unfortunately, he’s currently injured and won’t return until the new year.
If he comes back as his old self, then Liverpool may well be back to attempt to woo him once again.
