‘Cheap option’: Romano delivers new Liverpool update as they seek late Konrad Laimer deal

Fabrizio Romano has given an update as Liverpool look to strike a deal for Konrad Laimer. The midfielder has one year on his contract.

It seems that Liverpool have had eyes on Konrad Laimer late in the transfer window. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that the Reds won’t have things their own way.

“RB Leipzig have no intention to let Konrad Laimer leave unless they’ll receive a crazy bid – looks extremely unlikely,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Liverpool were considering Laimer as cheap option as he’s out of contract next summer, so he’s now expected to stay.”

Laimer had been linked with Liverpool late in the window after Jurgen Klopp admitted he was looking for a new midfielder. With one year on his deal, the Leipzig player looked perfect. Instead, the Reds will probably have to look elsewhere.

Liverpool seek Konrad Laimer deal

There’s little doubt that Laimer would be a brilliant signing. As we recently covered, he’s statistically the hardest-pressing midfielder in Europe. Everyone can clearly see how Liverpool would like that.

But as good as that is, there’s no chance that the club pay ‘crazy’ money for a player with one year on his deal. It’s just not how Liverpool operate.

In fact, that was the message from Klopp on Tuesday in his press conference. While other clubs may be tempted by such late deal, Liverpool won’t be. It must be the right player for the right price or the deal won’t happen.

We do believe Laimer is the right player but when he’s free in 2023, the right price is hard to judge. It’s a similar situation with Roberto Firmino at Liverpool. They won’t sell for a massive fee, even in that last year. Teams won’t be tempted.

Thus we’re not sure what it will take for Liverpool to make a move in the next few days. A bargain deal for Laimer was their best option, really, but it turns out that options was never really there. Fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, we imagine.
